Coach Chic,

With everyone's crazy schedule the biggest problem I face as a coach is getting the kids to the rink on time as it is. How do you suggest I push the issue and importance of getting to the rink early, getting dressed early and getting stretched and ready to go early?

Derek:

Great question.

Now, I'm not sure this will work for everyone, or in every situation.

However, in more recent years, I haven't had a set time for my players to be at the rink. What I do instead is ask the guys to be ready and stretching at a given time.

And, lest you think I take this area lightly...

I talk to my players often about the need to put-on their "game faces" at a certain point. In other words, there's a time to relax, listen to music and joke with buddies, and then there's a time when everyone needs to really get serious and focus on the job at hand.

I also convey to team parents the idea that the time spent at the rink -- before practices and before games -- is when most of the friendships form between players. I've seen it often, that the kids who hang-out early become really good friends, while the guy who always rushes-in at the last minute is almost treated like an outcast.

Hoping that helps.

It always seems as though I have an afterthought right after I push "Publish" on a comment.

Such is the case here, in that I should add another thing I often stress with my players...

As you likely know, problems like a broken skate lace or missing helmet screw are easy to deal with long before game-time. However, little issues like those create a panic situation if they're discovered at the very last minute. And, while it's obvious that these will upset the player in question, I don't think many realize how much something like this can unsettle teammates and even the coaches.

My point: dress early enough to ensure you're really ready.
